No experience with the CQR but the Bruce is a mighty fine anchor.

my 40lb stainless copy of a CQR held my heanvy 30 foot sailboat during a 100+ knot microburst in Florida. The mistakes people made with CQR's are1, not heavy enough 2. not enough chain. 25lb is the absolute minimum, and at least 60 feet of chain

Dock neighbor just gave me a 45 lb “made in Scotland” Cqr. I watched SV Panope’s Cqr test videos. I think it does great, especially on the 180 degree reset. If I was willing to spend the money, I’d get a Vulcan but I don’t think the advantage justifies the high prices. My 10k mile cruise in the 90’s was all on a Bruce, it did fine too. Only had an issue in north western Costa Rica, deep water set with weed/grass or kelp I suspect. Otherwise, worked a charm from the pacific north and south on through to the Atlantic and up the east coast to Maine.

Used a 25 lb. CQR for 20 years on my 26' gaff rigged cutter in New England. Dragged once at Cuttyhunk in heavy kelp. Now have a 37' Nordic Tug which came with a 66 lb. Bruce. The Bruce has worked well for six years so far, otherwise I would have bought another CQR.

I have a 50,000lb sailboat which I have anchored over 1,000 times in the past 14 years in all kinds of bottom conditions with a 75lb original CQR and all chain. I have only dragged once, in over 50 knots on a heavy kelp bottom. The anchor did reset it self in this instance. I now sail in the Pacific NW and will continue to happily use my CQR as my primary anchor. Thanks for the helpful article.

Peter, I wish he had test Fortress anchors. He conducts good testing. My personal opinion is most anchor fails anecdotes are a result of poor anchoring skills and undersized anchors. We never dragged with either our 33kg Rocna nor our FX-37 Fortress over all our 44,000 miles cruising.

I have a friend on a 48' catamaran who uses a big Rocna, 70 lb, I think. He's bent it and had to have it straightened in a big machine shop press 3 times. I'm never heard of a CQR bending. I'll stick with my CQR and Bruce!
