The OSCAR system looks quite large to sit atop a mast on a recreational sailboat. I'm installing 12V wireless automotive "backup" cameras on each spreader with one pointed forward and the other aft, linking to a screen at the nav desk. They work on cars in all kinds of weather conditions and they aren't expensive and they're readily available online and in auto parts stores so I figure why not try it out? I have wondered about floating or awash containers but never took the time to go look up the answers to the questions rolling around in my head. Questions for a rainy day before I head across the Atlantic...

Do the companies who lose these shipping containers typically try to recover them?

How long does a container that goes overboard usually float?

If they are generally not a target for recovery after an accident, why not mandate holes in the container so that they sink quickly and don't become a floating obstruction?

For containers that are lost and float away, does the current gather them in certain parts of the ocean similar to the plastic patch in the Pacific?

Maybe a secondary use of the mast head camera would be to check ICW bridge clearance
